@james Just because we Windows and Linux over OSX doesn’t mean that we are poor. It just means that we would rather have two computers running good operating systems rather than one computer running a crappy operating system.
Exactly, If mac was so dam good then the world would run on macs now wouldn’t it. Windows sux too, more as time goes on, and linux is just a pain in the @ss, but at least its better than the other two. At least they don’t want all your money like the other vultures.
New updates don’t bother me, they’re installing when I shut the computer down. What makes Windows market share so high is that it is used a lot, by businesses. Can you imagine a big corporation using MAC? Funny huh? I think IT professionals would suggest their bosses to switch to MAC, if it would be any good. It will never happen. So in my opinion MACs will always be used by limited group of people who like appearance, not performance and uniformity.
As an IT professional(with over 20 years experience with both mac and PC) I don’t think IT professionals would suggest a switch to mac….maybe to Linux. I prefer Linux over the other two and yes, I realize what OSX is built on. But that being said, mac is a neutered machine. As things stand, PC is dominant and for a good reason. Good price, Great power and very good at diverse roles. mac is good as a door stop.
@Vladik. With the exception of Microsoft based IT staff, I would say most network and system Admins actually prefer Unix systems (Linux, BSD, etc). It just so happens that Mac OS X is a properly configured and easy to use variant of BSD. Just because the masses use a product (i.e. Windows) doesn’t make it superior. I used to be a Windows IT guy and I switched to Apple and linux based IT over a year ago now. I can tell you this: Offices that have switched to non-windows systems are much happier. They don’t have to deal with a horrible GUI, bad design, and constant attack by viruses caused by a poorly written operating system.
The argument is flawed. When you speak of market shares, you are talking about the Windows OS as opposed to the Mac OS. Mac OS is proprietary. What can be extrapolated from your numbers is this: 5% of all computer users run Macintosh computers. The other 95% use computers built by other manufacturers including individuals. They all use some form of *NIX or Windows because Mac OS is proprietary to Macintosh hardware and they do not own Macintosh hardware. I run OS X, FreeBSD, XP and CentOS. The fact is, they all have great uses. I run XP in a VM on my OS X laptop. No danger of any malware getting to ring 1 of my Mac from a VM. I like OS X, it has many of the libraries I am used to from writing code on Unix and Linux machines. It has nice free development kits. I like how it uses real Berkeley sockets, it’s memory management is the best. IPFW! The way it handles threads is great. I love the journaling file system. The GUI is really nice. It’s a perfectly configured BSD laptop. You really can’t go wrong. It has none of those Windows repaint() errors. No terrible NTFS/FAT fragmented file systems. No windows memory management, where it doesn’t properly keep up with garbage collection and things just stay in ram making your machine run slower and have to reboot. No ridiculous registry. Direct access to all hardware on a very low level from the shell. Native support and access to all seven layers of the TCP/IP protocol. Sheesh, so much good to say about OS X, so much bad to say about Windows!
@Brock. Even with your distaste for Mac OS X, it is a gross oversimplification to write off Mac OS X as a door stop. Please, enlighten me how a OS X is neutered? Don’t get me wrong. I am a huge advocate for FOSS, open hardware, and GNU/Linux. I am just curious as to why you hate a stable, secure, and well supported OS so much?
I do IT work for a library. We use Linux servers now but still use XP Pro on all computers. We haven’t had a virus attack in over 10 years. Also, I use a vista laptop (waiting on my copy of 7) and I don’t use anti-virus or a firewall and I’ve never gotten a virus (and I use stumble, p2p daily). With Windows defender and firewall disabled, my computer only downloads updates about once a week… No maintenance, no problems… I love windows. Not sure why/how people screw their own computers up so badly. Gives windows a bad name.
I’m running Win7 now, and it’s fantastic. There are tons of improvements that help me work more efficiently. Not to mention, everything I want and need is compatible. The ONLY reason I would buy a mac would be for my live audio rig, or a mobile studio rig. I would NEVER buy a Mac Pro… I can easily match it’s speed for thousands less. In fact, the only reason I would use a mac for my mobile rig is because there is shortage of quality laptops for the PC.
I don’t like using an OS that is so restricted that I can’t even turn off mouse acceleration…
Think about it…
seriously? Mac OS runs way better than windows. windows is constantly crashing, freezing, or stalling. Mac OS or Linux is the way to go. It blows my mind how many ppl are still using Windows and Internet explorer for that matter.
btw ive had windows 7 shit out on me 3 times already. ive only had it for 2 months and it managed to crash my hd and my back up. thats when i finally made the switch to linux.
Ive been fooling around with windows since windows 3.1. I switched over to linux Mint after years of taking half looks at it. Bottom line its more secure hands down, does things straight to the point, and best of all its FREE. Lets just be honest, windows is for the lazy not to bright computer user.
I find it mildly amusing how some non-Mac users carry on about one thing or another is an attempt to convince god knows who that they are faster, cheaper, better, bigger, smaller, blah blah blah while Mac users don’t feel a need to boast at all. Mac users are happy and not bothered by all that childish nonsense. Macs sell themselves and perform as promised. I don’t care if other people don’t like them or want them. We are too busy using our Macs to worry about it.
Pieter, was is there to be happy about? I’m a current Mac user only because my dad and brother said that it would be easier and better. I’ve been using it for the past 2 years and still dislike it. I feel limited when using it in certain aspects, like the picture editor, iPhoto. What crap is that? Paint on Windows is way better and easier to use. Also where is my solitaire?! And Word and PowerPoint? If you want any of that you either have to buy it or try and find a free version online. Mac is so freakin’ expensive than it needs to be, especially when the computer itself is already expensive enough. I really can’t wait to get my Dell Windows back in a month. I wonder if I’ll cry tears of joy when I do.
Actually, mac is 10% share now. I recommend doing more research before boasting about a company whose over all product quality and return on investment has been declining dramatically in the past 10 years.
Basically it comes down to this….show me one thing you can do on a mac i cant do on a PC, you cant, but i can show you 100000000000000 i can do on a PC you OS X idiots will never be able to. thats what happens when apple runs your life
You mean “downgrade”

@james Just because we Windows and Linux over OSX doesn’t mean that we are poor. It just means that we would rather have two computers running good operating systems rather than one computer running a crappy operating system.
And rich people can’t spell, @james.
92% windows vs 5% mac market share!!! Does it tell you anything? MAC sucks!!! Windows is top of the line. Mostly used OS.
Exactly, If mac was so dam good then the world would run on macs now wouldn’t it. Windows sux too, more as time goes on, and linux is just a pain in the @ss, but at least its better than the other two. At least they don’t want all your money like the other vultures.
Vladik… 92% windows vs 5% mac market share!!! That tells me the average consumer is stupid as fuck….
Oh and btw… Are new updates ready for your computer?
New updates don’t bother me, they’re installing when I shut the computer down. What makes Windows market share so high is that it is used a lot, by businesses. Haha nice.
Mac sucks, pc+linux forever

I am an independent film editor, and I own a Macbook Pro. I can also boot Windows/Ubuntu from the same machine.

How come that apple computer’s logo look different than normal?
Windows has an app for that, what about mac?

Hilarious.
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Vladik, You forgot the ~1% Linux users. We’re the smartest of all. Haha. You actually PAY for an operating system.
